Important: This calculator is an illustrative educational tool, not a financial plan. It uses simplified assumptions including constant returns and constant inflation, which do not reflect real market conditions. It does not model market volatility, sequence-of-returns risk, taxes, Social Security, pensions, or healthcare costs. Do not use this calculator as the basis for retirement decisions. Always consult a qualified financial professional.
The 4% Rule
A common guideline suggests withdrawing no more than 4% of your portfolio per year in retirement, adjusted for inflation. This has historically given a high probability of your money lasting 30 years.
This rule is a starting point, not a guarantee. Fees reduce your safe withdrawal rate — a 1% annual fee on a 4% withdrawal effectively means you need a 5% return just to break even.
